There went my weekend

I bought Metal Gear Solid 2 on Friday. What a great game. First of all it’s got one of the best manuals I’ve ever seen in a game. It’s a manga telling a short story and explaining all you need to know to get started on the fly (in case you haven’t played the first part) and everything else will be explained to you in the game. The more advanced stuff being explained ingame in a small library with short movies showing what your character will do.

The game itself plays very good after a bit of adjusting to the controls. Sometimes the camera angles are a little odd and sometimes, especially when there’s a lot of action (which doesn’t happen too often if you’re cautious and avoid being seen) it’s a little hard to control. You just have to push too many buttons at once sometimes. That is no problem though for the greater part of the game because there is no action but rather a very tactical tiptoeing around and hiding and quickly taking out guards without killing them as to not leave any bloody traces.

The graphics are stunning and the animation of the characters is really good. I love it when you hide behind a corner and peek around it to see what’s there.

There’s a lot of tension when you sneak around because you never know when a guard comes around the corner unexpectedly and you just barely manage to hide all the while praying that he doesn’t look in your direction. That can really speed up your heart beat.

Okay, enough of it. Have to get back to work. Just buy the game already. It’s worth it.

I couldn’t agree more. The animation, the tension, the graphics, …everything is top notch in this game. I hope you enjoy it! I did until the storyline took a few bad turns, but that’s just one person’s opinion. I’m sure you’ll love the game.

I don’t really like that you have to play Raiden after that short tanker intro. He’s so …uncool. He’s a real sissy somehow and his girlfriend (or whatever she is) Rose doesn’t really help. I can understand that many die-hard MGS fans hate not being able to play Snake. He’s just so much cooler.

I read an interview with Hideo Kojima though and there he said that they had to do something to make sure the game stays believable. Snake is such a super hero after the first part that it would not be very plausible if he still needed hints and help through the codec. But they needed to give the player those hints (especially if it’s someone who hasn’t played the first part). So this is why they invented Raiden….

Apart from that I still love the game.

But during the tanker part is a lot of introduction too. Snake doesn’t even know how to shoot a gun….

Well that’s just because he doesn’t know the new interface on PS2 yet.

After awhile Raiden grew on me, but I still like everything about Snake better. You’ll soon have a different reason the whole “keep the game believable thing”. It wouldn’t have made sense if Snake would have gone through the game because…well… I have to remeber other people haven’t played the game yet. You’ll see what I mean once your about 2/3 through.

Random trivia moment: Did you know Raiden’s voice is the same guy who did Johhny Quest’s voice? Yeah, that’s why I hated his voice.
